International Day of Peace 2025: Act Now for a Peaceful World

Every year on 21 September, the world pauses to mark the International Day of Peace—a moment dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among nations and peoples. The 2025 theme, “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” is not only timely but also urgent. It reminds us that peace is not an abstract aspiration but a practical necessity, requiring immediate and collective action.

Peace today faces extraordinary challenges. From wars and violent conflicts to rising global inequality, climate-induced displacement, and polarized politics, humanity is navigating one of the most uncertain periods in history. According to the Global Peace Index 2025, conflict-related deaths and displacement remain at record highs, and fragile states continue to struggle with governance and resilience. Yet, even in this climate of turmoil, there are countless acts of courage and cooperation proving that peace is possible if we choose it.

The Call to Act Now

The phrase “Act Now for a Peaceful World” carries two important messages. First, it underscores the urgency of peace. The costs of inaction—whether through violence, war, or exclusion—are devastating, not only in lives lost but in opportunities destroyed. Second, it emphasizes collective responsibility. Governments, civil society, young people, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens must each play their part in building a more just and inclusive society.

At the Center for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development (CEPASD), this call to act resonates deeply with our mission and work. Since 2015, we have committed ourselves to advancing peace at the local, national, and international levels through innovative and inclusive initiatives.

Our Contribution to Advancing World Peace

  1. One Global Peace Summit

Since its inception, the One Global Peace Summit has provided a platform for global leaders, policymakers, peacebuilders, and young people to exchange ideas and strategies for sustainable peace. By convening voices across borders, the Summit has reinforced the principle that peace cannot be achieved in isolation; it requires collaboration across nations, sectors, and generations.

  1. International Peace Dialogue

We have hosted International Peace Dialogues that bring together stakeholders from diverse cultural, political, and professional backgrounds. These dialogues have created safe spaces for mutual understanding, conflict prevention, and reconciliation. They embody the idea that dialogue, not violence, is the most effective pathway to resolving disputes.

  1. Multistakeholder Forum on Youth, Peace, and Security

Recognizing the pivotal role of young people, CEPASD has championed the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda, in alignment with UN Security Council Resolution 2250. Through our multistakeholder forums, we provide young leaders with the tools, networks, and platforms they need to drive change in their communities. By empowering youth, we not only invest in peace today but also safeguard peace for future generations.

  1. Walk for Peace

Our annual Walk for Peace has become a symbolic yet powerful demonstration of solidarity and hope. It unites people of all walks of life-students, community leaders, diplomats, and everyday citizens-to reaffirm their commitment to nonviolence and peaceful coexistence. These walks remind us that peace begins in the choices we make daily, in our communities, and in our relationships.

From Local to Global Impact

What began as grassroots initiatives has grown into contributions to the global peacebuilding architecture. Over the past decade, CEPASD has worked in conflict-affected communities in Nigeria, across Africa, and with partners around the world to promote dialogue, reduce tensions, and address the root causes of violence.

Our work aligns with international frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the United Nations’ Youth, Peace and Security agenda. Through these efforts, we have built bridges across divides, fostered trust among communities, and shown that peace is not only possible but sustainable when rooted in justice, inclusion, and dignity.

Why This Year Matters

As the world marks the 2025 International Day of Peace, the message could not be clearer: the time to act is now. Inaction fuels cycles of violence; silence perpetuates injustice. Our global community must move from rhetoric to actio-strengthening institutions, empowering marginalized groups, addressing inequalities, and tackling the climate crisis with urgency.

At CEPASD, we remain committed to scaling our work, from grassroots peace hubs to global summits, ensuring that the voices of the youth, women, and communities most affected by conflict are not just heard but heeded.

Conclusion: Choosing Peace Together

Peace is not a gift that falls from the sky-it is the result of intentional choices, collective action, and sustained commitment. As we reflect on this year’s theme, “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” let us remember that peace is possible, but only if we choose it, nurture it, and defend it together.

From the One Global Peace Summit to the International Peace Dialogues, from the Walk for Peace to our decade-long work advancing peace locally and globally, CEPASD stands as a testament that when individuals and communities act with courage and vision, a peaceful world is within reach.

The International Day of Peace is more than a day of observance-it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to act, today, for a tomorrow where peace is the norm, not the exception.
